On Tour / De Gira

This July and August are crazy ones for me, and for the studio!  Wonderful crazy, but crazy.

Next week is TRIBAL FESTIVAL, in Mexico City, I’m the Godmother of the event!  Give speech, cut ribbon, teach class, dance!  That is July 15 - 18.

Then, on the 18th, I fly to Chiapas, to study with Katarina Burda who resides there part time, a great folcloric dancer and teacher, who taught many of the biggest names in bellydance, and was in Bal Anat back in the day.  Among her students:  Zoe Jakes, Elizabeth Strong, Mira Betz….*ahem* Elsanne… ;D

Back on the 23rd to give a seminar in Puebla the 24/25th, and back in the studio in San Miguel the 27th for class as usual, with lots of new info and inspiration!

SOBRE LA DANZA / ABOUT THE DANCE

Tribal Style Bellydance finds its roots in folkloric and contemporary dances of the Middle East and Mediterranean Region, including Northern Africa. It is also influenced by provincial dances of Eastern and Northern India. The performance reflects and insinuates elements of tribes along the Gypsy Trail, fusing ethnic costuming to create a fantasy of exotic cultures. The passionate turns and postures are reminiscent of Flamenco dancing while the music, like the steps, spans the globe.  Tribal Style Bellydance is the creative blending of styles evoking feelings of exotic locales and mythical eras. The costumes are composed of hand-embroidered silks and woolens, authentic jewelry and coins, and Banjara textiles, expertly combined for theatrical effect. Rich and colorful costuming enhances the exotic presentation of the dance.  The emphasis is one combining feminine dignity, sensuality, spirituality, beauty and strength.
As performed by the first Tribal Style Bellydance company in Mexico, Belibeya, this style of dance will tranport the audience to another time and place.  Enchanted and uplifted, the audience carries the mystical rhythms with them long after they leave the theatre.

Tribal Style Bellydance is not usually choreographed, but rather improvised. A lead dancer, who alternates throughout the performance, guides the other dancers through visual and verbal cues. When this style of improvisation is performed by a cohesive, experienced group, an exciting sense of community is enjoyed by the dancers as well as the audience.
